Lesson 17: Open Syllables
Objective: Learn about Closed syllables (with short-sleepy vowels) and Open syllables (with long-awake vowels.)
Assessment: Students read the words aloud and write them in their workbooks.
1. Watch “Closed and Open Syllables”:
(5 minutes)
2. Study the 10 vowels
(yellow = short-sleepy || red = long-awake)
with the
– ABC Face –
3. Review the mouth forms.
Have students repeat the sounds and names of the letters along with it.
4. Play game 21 of the
– Fat Rat Rap –
5. Do a page of
– Phonetic Exercises –
Open: Closed to Open – List 1
a) Click on the words.
b) Students write them in their class journals.
c) Students practice saying them with the
“Repeat after me” video.
d) Students practice saying them with the
“Say it with me” video.
6. Exit ticket:
Each student must say the 5 long-awake vowel sounds.
7. Homework:
Study the new vowels.
